See the layout of the Juniper Park spray showers

Construction for the new spray showers at Juniper Valley Park is already underway, but here’s what the layout of the new design looks like.

The $2 million revamp will not only bring in new spray showers, but also new concrete, lowered fencing, new plantings and ADA accessibility.

We all know how popular the spray shower gets among kids during the summer season.

Though the construction is expected to finish by next fall, we’re sure the children of Middle Village and greater Queens will enjoy the end product.

Metropolitan Avenue bridge project should be done soon

IMG_7930 copy

Thankfully, the project to replace the Metropolitan Avenue bridge deck is almost done.

Last week, Community Board 5’s Transportation Committee announced that the long-delayed work is “rapidly approaching completion.”

The new contractor, Beaver Concrete Construction Company, had been working diligently through Saturdays in hopes of getting it done by Thanksgiving.

Beaver Construction replaced the incompetent Mugrose Construction, which defaulted on its contract with the city last year.

That led to a severe delay in the project, extending the congestion and traffic along Metropolitan Avenue.

Read more about the project here.

Sewer project contractors won’t be working on Thanksgiving

unnamed

Just a heads up that the contractor for the combined sewers and water main project on Penelope Avenue will NOT be working on Thursday, November 22 and Friday, November 23.

As Middle Village residents know well, due to the project, there have been continued restrictions to parking and driveways as the work continues.

If you have any questions, call the community construction liaison, Torre Coley, at 862-240-4912 or 718-326-3840.

Hip Hop pioneers promote healthy living at St. Margaret

IMG_3079

Last Thursday, some of hip hop’s pioneers paid a visit to Saint Margaret Catholic Academy in Middle Village for a lesson on healthy living.

Hip Hop H.E.A.L.S. (Healthy Eating and Living in Schools) spent some time with students to promote healthy living. The organization’s Director of Hip Hop Educational Programming Easy A.D. Harris, a founding member of the legendary group Cold Crush Brothers, and Director of Music Production Artie Green encouraged children to become more aware of the lifestyle choices they could make.

Through fun, interactive hip hop songs, videos and games, Hip Hop H.E.A.L.S. promotes a healthy understanding of calories as food energy and encourages a balance between food consumption and physical activity.

Children learn how to apply their individual caloric requirement to food and exercise choices as well as navigate restaurant menu boards and utilize calorie postings to inform food choices.

Nearly one hundred kids participated in the program at St. Margaret’s gymnasium. They participated in quizzes, dances, earned prizes and sang along with Harris and Green for a fun-filled educational event.
