Community board members are appointed for two-year terms by either the borough president or the council member for the district.

Earlier this month, Borough President Melinda Katz announced her appointments to all 14 Queens community boards.

Here are the BP’s appointments for the 2019-2021 term for Community Board 5, which serves Maspeth, Middle Village, Glendale and Ridgewood:

The next CB5 meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 10 at 7:30 p.m. at Christ the King High School.

The Juniper Park Civic Association will host their town hall meeting tomorrow (Thursday, March 28) at 7:30 p.m. Find out what’s going on around the park and bring any of your ideas and concerns. The meeting will be held at Our Lady of Hope Auditorium, 71st Street & Eliot Avenue in Middle Village.

Late last month, officers from the Italian-American organization, Associazione Culturale Italiana Di New York, visited Christ the King High School.

The group donated $5,500 from a local comedy show for art scholarships for CTK students.

The scholarship will be called the “Constance DelVecchio Maltese Art Scholarship,” named after the late wife of CTK Chairman Serphin Maltese.

The late Maltese was a renowned artist whose achievements included the award-winning “Age of Discovery Navigators” portrait series.

She was knighted by the Republic of Italy and given the title “Cavaliere” for her artistic achievements, which enhanced Italian-American heritage.

After revising their proposal to add new loading docks to Rentar Plaza, Rentar Development Corporation received the support of Community Board 5 earlier this week.

CB5 voted 27 to 3 in favor of the application, which will move forward in the approval process.

According to the Land Use Committee, Rentar “went back to the drawing board” to accommodate community concerns about traffic and safety. They moved the new loading docks inside the current property instead.

The corporation is looking to attract tenants to replace Kmart and Toys R Us, both of which filed for bankruptcy in these tough times for retail.

Their retail spots total 190,000 square feet.

The Middle Village Home of the Week is a lovely home located in Middle Village North.

An off-duty police officer was shot at a house across the street from Villa Erasmo this afternoon, according to reports.

The unnamed officer, with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, was taken to Elmhurst Hospital.

The house was on 69th Lane near Juniper Boulevard.

Officers from the 104th Precinct were at the scene. The shooting happened around 2:30 p.m.

According to residents posting in a private Facebook group, nearby PS/IS 128 was put on lockdown.

With the partial federal government shutdown entering its fifth week, State Senator Joe Addabbo is teaming up with local institutions to help out the 800,000 furloughed employees who are working without pay.

Starting this week, Addabbo’s district offices in Howard Beach (159-53 102nd Street) and Middle Village (66-85 73rd Place) are collecting food and toiletries for the workers.

Queens County Savings Bank locates at 156-02 Crossbay Boulevard and 156-32 Crossbay Boulevard also are taking supplies.

The drive will collect items like canned goods, pastas, cereals, soaps, detergents, toothpaste, feminine hygiene products and more.

The supplies will be distributed to Our Lady of Grace Church (100-05 159th Avenue) in Howard Beach and Sacred Heart food pantry (83-17 78th Avenue) in Glendale. These sites will also be drop-off locations.

To collect the supplies at the drop-off locations, federal works will need to display their federal IDs.

Borough President Melinda Katz is accepting applications for “qualified and civic-minded individuals” to serve on their local community boards.

CBs play an important advisory role on land use and zoning, safety, parks, libraries and other neighborhood concerns.

The membership application is available online here.

The deadline for applications to be completed, signed and notarized is Friday, February 8.

An appointed two-year term of service begins on April 1. Each member serves a two-year term.

Remember that this weekend, the M train will not run at Myrtle/Wyckoff, Seneca Avenue, Forest Avenue and Fresh Pond Road.

The New York City Transit’s Track Construction Division has scheduled the renewal of mainline track on the Myrtle Avenue line between Myrtle/Wyckoff and Metropolitan Ave.

The weekend closure will last until Monday, December 24.

From 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays, the MTA will be doing preparatory work. The track replacement phase begins at 10 p.m. Friday, working continuously until 5 a.m. on Monday morning.

NYCT will stage a mobile crane adjacent to the track structure to hoist and lower track panels and materials. The crane will be located at 65th Place, between 68th Avenue and the dead end, shown above.

Flagging and traffic devices will be used for public safety, and parking will be restricted at the street crane location.

We ask neighbors to refrain from parking their vehicles towards the end of the dead end where the crew will be working. Parking will be restricted only on the side of Mafera Playground, but our crews will allow residents to continue to park on the residential portion of the street.
