Students at the crowded P.S./I.S. 49 will have a little more room to learn ands grow, thanks to a new $3.1 million addition.

“Together, the City Council and state were able to get the money needed,” said Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley to a crowd of kindergarten and fourth-grade students at the Friday groundbreaking. “And when you have this new building, there will be 13 new classrooms. You won’t be overcrowded as much as you currently are.”

Crowley said many parents who wanted to register their children for kindergarten were often told they would be placed on a waiting list for the 80th Street school, despite living across the street or the next block.

“No longer will our parents be told that,” Crowley said.
